The Department of Pulmonary Medicine

Dr. D. J. Christopher

Pulmonary Medicine has been in existence as the departments of “Chest diseases” and “Thoracic Medicine” since the 1970s. The first regression equations to predict the normal lung function values for the Indian population were derived by a Dr Jim Milledge, a British Physician; from research done at CMC, Vellore. The department has had a chequered history over the next couple of decades and in the year 1993, it was amalgamated with Medicine Unit 2, for want of suitable manpower. In the year 2000 it resurrected as a separate department and acquired its present name.

Thoracscopy Workshop

Medical thoracoscopy/pleuroscopy is used increasingly by chest physicians and has become, after bronchoscopy, the second most important endoscopic technique in respiratory medicine. It is considered to be one of the main areas of interventional pulmonology and an important part..

Bronchoscopy Workshop

Gustav Killian mastered rigid bronchoscopy, which was later improvised by Chevalier Jackson. Later came the flexible bronchoscopy invented by Ikeda. Since then bronchoscopy has helped mankind to inspect and analyze pulmonary pathologies..

CPET Workshop

CPET is a valuable tool in the diagnosis, management and prognostication in a variety of pulmonary and non-pulmonary diseases. There is renewed interest in learning this technique. The role of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in the pre -operative setting has been established in lung resection,

Respiratory Research Wing

The Respiratory Research Wing of the department is involved in National and International multicentre pharmaceutical trials and “original research” in pulmonary physiology, asthma, COPD, tuberculosis, sarcoidosis, lung cancer and other respiratory diseases.
